What is the overall best method of training?
Dumbbells definitely have their uses, but for my own training I choose body-weight every time.
So why do more people seem to focus on free weights?
Well to be fair, for most people they are the best option at least at first. No matter what your ability & fitness level free weights will help you to move forward in your muscular fitness goals. With a good selection of dumbbells there is virtually no part of your body you can’t train and improve. On top of this free weights can be easily monitored and measured for progress, whereas body weight exercises can be more tricky to keep track of.
OK, so why choose bodyweight?
There are many reasons why as a trainer I would choose bodyweight exercises over free weights. Here are a few of my reasons:
- Allows freedom of expression
- Impressive to watch
- Free range of motion
- Skills are more transferable
At the end of the day what you choose to use to get into shape is completely down to your preference. Although I love bodyweight exercises, I regularly use free weights, especially dumbbells with my clients as I can monitor their progress more closely. With new clients I use mainly free weights, but every now and then I slip in a few more exciting moves and over time training becomes far more adventurous.
