How to use your gym time more productively

Develop your “metabolic foundation”!

“What is my metabolic foundation?”

“The metabolic foundation” is a phrase I use to describe the speed that your body breaks down fat reserves. Generally speaking the more muscle you have on your body, the more energy your body needs to maintain itself. This is because muscle (unlike fat) is living tissue and needs to feed.

What really happens to fat in the gym?

Because fat is the hardest energy store to break down it is the last to go. The first thing that you will use up is your sugar reserve. You will often recognise this as fatigue. Sometimes low sugar can also be accompanied with “the shakes”. The second energy source is protein. After utilising excess sugar the body will start breaking down muscle tissue as energy. this accomplishes two “survival” goals. The body can turn the protein into sugar to keep going and also use this process to lower the metabolic rate, therefore reducing the risk of starvation in the future.

Fat however is the last to go and if you do manage to break down any fat during your workout, you can guarantee you have used up valuable muscle and damaged your metabolic foundation.

“So should I try to build more muscle?”

Yes. Building muscle is the way to go. If you want to be overall leaner and not have to worry so much about putting the weight back on, muscle is the way to go.

It’s not enough!

Having muscle wont make you thin on it’s own. Unfortunately the energy burning effects just aren’t enough. If you are overweight, you are overweight because you have eaten the wrong food. To fix this you will need to adjust your diet permanently! When I talk of building a metabolic foundation I am talking about being productive. Avoid aerobics for weight loss and at least do something that will have a positive effect. Not only that, but done right, you will look great when you get rid of that bulky excess.

That doesn’t mean your workouts can’t help you to lose fat…

Another great benefit of (good) weight training in the amount of repair time needed. Done right this repair job could leave your metabolism soaring for 3-4 days. Not only this but add in some (well thought out) interval training/circuit based training and on the right eating regimen you will see the fat melt off your muscles!

The last word

In my opinion male or female it is essential to build a good metabolic foundation, by building up as much natural muscle as possible. However without a good healthy diet, you may as well stay home so here are a few tips to help you along the way.

  1. Start with a balanced, plant based diet.
(to find out more check out some of my dietary articles)
  2. Use intense, short resistance workouts to build your physique
(ladies this will not make you big)
  3. Document and plan progressive workouts
(read here to learn how to plan your workouts)
  4. Monitor everything… Diet, exercises, sets, reps, form, measurements etc…

While I can’t tell you everything in one article, if you are looking to improve your knowledge, have a browse through the articles on this website and you will find everything you need to get you started in the right direction.
