SHOULD I JOIN A GYM?

Not necessarily. You should only consider joining a gym if you have a clear plan of action. The vast majority of people join the gym with good intentions and fail miserably. If you don't want to fall into that trap, you need to set goals and plan your strategy. For most people this is an intimidating task, but it is necessary! To get best results, you need to hire a personal trainer. Personal trainers do a hell of a lot more than motivate you.

Most people think they know how to lose weight.... believe me most people do not! losing weight is not as simple as calories in vs calories out. The body is so much more complex than that. Most people including some trainers still believe if you exercise more and do less, this is the most effective way to lose weight. Unfortunately they are mistaken. This is why most long term gym goers are still overweight.

If you want to lose weight you must take in to account that the more exercise you do, the hungrier you get and the harder you train the more you crave sugar and starch. If you are overweight this is down to your diet, so this is where you should begin.

A CALORIE IS A CALORIE, ISN'T IT?

A calorie is energy, but you cannot choose how your body uses that energy. Do you remember that time when you had that large bowl of pasta? Do you remember how you felt after eating all of that energy? Did you feel really energetic? NO! You felt like sleeping! Why would you be tired after eating all of those calories? This is because the meal you had caused a sugar surge in your blood stream. When your blood sugar spikes, so does your insulin! Insulin is your safety net to stop your blood sugar going too high. if it does you will get sick or even die. This happens in diabetics! Most of the time your body will store this excess sugar as body-fat. I can stop this happening by eating low carbs, right? Yes, your right. If you eat low carbs you will stop your blood sugar from spiking, however a lot of high protein foods will make you sick and after the initial weight loss will stunt your progress.


SHOULD I START DIETING?

You need to approach weight loss from the angle of lifestyle rather than just diet. If your body is healthy it will be lean! if you are overweight your body is sick!

For most effective, long term results you need to look towards healthy living. Most people try to avoid this because it seems like the most difficult option. In my opinion it is actually the easiest. A lot of people you know will encourage you to keep eating your favourite foods but cut your portions. These foods are often foods that you have addictions to, so cutting down on a long term basis will be impossible. The only way to deal with them is to cut them out of your diet! As this is the only way to be rid of the addiction.

Once you have replaced the poisons for real foods you will love your diet. it will taste good and you will always feel satisfied! (It is best to hire a personal trainer or a dietician to help you with this).

Calories

Losing fat is not about counting calories. Many people you speak to and even people who consider themselves to be fitness professionals will tell you that if you eat less and do more you will lose weight. To a point they are right. If you restrict your calories, the chances are, initially you will lose weight, however if you have tried to lose weight in the past, you know that this is easier said than done, as the more you restrict,  the more you crave. The reason behind this is the the foods you were eating were not balanced. if you do not eat the right food combinations, you will crave and eventually the craving WILL get the better of you.


Muscle

As you may have heard, muscle is denser and heavier than fat. For example if you lost a stone of fat and gained a stone of muscle you would be considerably smaller. Muscle is much more active in the body than fat and and therefore uses more energy. Gaining muscle will help dramatically in your quest to be leaner.


Insulin

Now I know you've heard of it, you probably know a diabetic that has to inject this substance, but do you know what it is? Insulin is a hormone that has many purposes, but one of them is controlling your blood sugar. when blood sugar spikes in a healthy person, the insulin is responsible for removing the excess sugar from the blood. If you eat a sugary snack, the chances are this sugar will be removed from the blood and stored as fat. This is one of the reasons that calorie counting doesn't work. Certain foods cause a blood sugar spike and other foods don't. if you can avoid the spikes this will help enormously in reversing the waight gain process.


Inflammation

Obesity is an inflammatory condition and inflammatory foods are one of the major causes of weight gain. Certain foods contain substances which will build inflammation inside the body,These foods are a dangerously large part of the western diet and these foods are killing us. Not only do they cause obesity but they also cause auto-immune diseases such as arthriti,s diabetes, heart disease, lupus and the list goes on. If these foods continue to be a large part of our diet, the future is bleak.
